Convo w/Dellprime (snippet) about best routes to pursue a career

Writer's picture: Joshua HarrisJoshua Harris

This is a conversation that was had on May 7 with Mr. Dell himself, #DellNoPC the accountability coach.

Being someone who is involved in a tech field and a Developer I thought it only right to have the discussion with this gentleman about routes as we emerge into in a digital age. Some of us work jobs that are in service retail agriculture nursing etc. Yet some of us work with technology & computers on a regular basis. It was interesting to hear everyone's perspective and the extended clip of this ≈ 3 hour conversation.

Dell:

I actually thought about you when I, when it came out about this space as well too, because I remember hearing you saying that you were self-taught, right? So I was like, I just want to hear all the, the advantages and disadvantage of each.

Joshua:

I'm, gonna be honest though, I'm not gonna sit here and just like, put myself on a pedestal and be cocky. Honestly, I had good examples,

the title before college versus trade school. I'm like, damn! Fot me, I, I'm a natural like learner. I enjoy the process of learning stuff. You know what I'm saying? Me, I'm going to;

when I was in school, I was like, what y'all telling me it doesn't always add up. Let me go do my own research. Let me hit up the library before we had the computers and stuff like that. Let me ask the "old heads", like, is this valid? Does this check out?

It's just knowing that certain trades and certain jobs are gonna require you to have, a sanction or a license from the government to be able to do that and other things aren't.

So if it doesn't, don't spend your money, because they’re taking money from you. Every time you spend money, somebody is taking money from you. People are just taught that education, education, education is the way instead of competence, right?

I don't care about your credentials. I hire people. I've hired people before. I've had employees, I have friends who work with me and stuff like that. I do not care about your credentials. I need you to perform your job at a high level. That's the way things have been done traditionally in this country because it allows them to keep the current structure that's in place.

But if you have less means less money, less opportunities, then the people who you work with should value your competence more than whatever piece of paper or credential that you have. So that, that's just how I feel about it, man. People need to really like think about these things.

Dell: Yeah, know I…
